'Lulu' Drake

The first Horse of the Month for 2021 is Lulu! Lulu’s owner Jess told us that “I've had Lulu for 11 years, and being a happy hacker I started to notice that she was slightly breathless after our usual uphill canters. I assumed this was just a sign of her age and didn't think too much about it until she became lethargic on our rides which concerned me. Around this time she had a bit of a sticky eye which despite treating kept coming back, and she had also developed a cresty neck and a pot belly. Not long after these observations the vet came to microchip her so I asked for her opinion. She immediately recommended a Cushing’s test.

When the result came back positive I was taken slightly by surprise as I'd told myself I was just ruling it out. The vet prescribed a daily tablet to treat the condition, and I was amazed how quickly I noticed a difference! Her cresty neck was the first thing to change - and this was after just a couple of weeks of treatment! She is also back to her old self with regard to energy. Luckily she has never suffered from laminitis so hopefully I caught it early. Around the time of starting the medication I moved house and now have her at home which is lovely so am hoping for many more riding years with my old girl”

This is such a lovely story Jess – thanks so much for sharing it with us
